IF YOU GO
• What: "Pride and Patriotism"
• When: 7 p.m. Wednesday
• Where: Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall, 8099 College Parkway S.W., Fort Myers
• Cost: Tickets are $6 each and available by calling the Symphony Box Office at 418-1500.
Writing, art and music are separate subjects at school, but the best of each will be on display at Wednesday night's second annual "Pride and Patriotism: Youth Celebrating the Arts" event.
The Lee County School District will honor students who participated in the 2004 fiction writing and art contest, which focused on patriotic themes and American heritage. The Southwest Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra, along with bands and choruses from several public schools, will perform during the 90-minute event.
"This is a wonderful opportunity for three communities to get together — the veterans, arts and school communities — wrapped up in a red, white and blue package," said school board member Elinor Scricca.
Organizers allowed even-numbered grade levels to participate this year, offering students a chance to produce both artwork and essays relating to patriotic themes. The 12 first-place winners, six in art and six in writing, each hail from different Lee County schools.

44 Million Americans don't Have Basic Reading and Writing Skills
44 Million Americans don't Have Basic Reading and Writing Skills
November 2004 (Newstream) --
ANCHOR LEAD: You'd be surprised to learn how many Americans don't have basic reading and writing skills. Roberta Facinelli tells us about one effort to help these families. (:60)
SCRIPT: Newsbreak, I'm Roberta Facinelli. Nearly 44 million adults in the U.S. have such poor reading skills, they can't help their children with their homework. This low literacy level also stands in the way of finding a good job. November 1st is National Family Literacy Day - and the start of a month-long period aimed at recognizing the positive impact of parents and children reading and learning together. Sharon Darling is president and founder of the National Center for Family Literacy.
CUT: (Darling) The National Center for Family Literacy knows that family literacy programs change not just one generation - but all that follow. When a parent does not have the basic literacy skills required to read a newspaper or a note sent home from school, it will be difficult for them to support their child's education. Following National Family Literacy Day, the month of November is an excellent opportunity for educators and parents to consider the importance of families learning together for a more educated tomorrow.
SCRIPT: Throughout the month of November, parents and children can celebrate learning together in creative ways. For a free calendar of literacy activities, visit famlit.org. I'm Roberta Facinelli.

The Sun Herald | 11/07/2004 | Goal for November: Write a novel
Goal for November: Write a novel
By KAREN SANDSTROM
NEWHOUSE NEWS SERVICE
In the olden days, novels were produced by combining one rickety typewriter, a drafty garret and years of neurotic hand-wringing.
Now meet Chris Baty of Oakland, Calif. At 31, he's the brash, friendly inventor of the literary microwave oven called National Novel Writing Month.
"NaNoWriMo," as Baty calls it, is this month.
Since 1999, Baty has spent one month a year furiously pounding out a new 50,000-word novel. With five such efforts under his belt, he readily admits: "None of them have been published."
