WASHINGTON - First lady Laura Bush celebrated Southern writing Monday in her first literary symposium since last year's was canceled over concerns that some invited poets would use it to protest the impending war in Iraq.
In the East Room of the White House, actors, musicians and contemporary authors honored writers Truman Capote, Flannery O'Connor and Eudora Welty.
'For these authors, storytelling was their life,' said Bush, a former teacher and librarian who has made reading one of her signature causes as first lady."
